What happened to Marias baby’s umbilical cord in Coronatation Street?

Don’t know about you, but watching Coronation Street tonight (3rd July 2009), I thought the unlikely story of Maria having a baby in a shack on a beach, with psycho Tony Gordon as the stand-in mid-wife, was a little far-fetched – even by the Street’s standards. The arrival of the baby swaddled in Tony’s sweaty T-shirt was unpleasant  to watch, but the miracle of the baby being delivered without an umbilical cord and no nasty blood was rather a large oversight.
